With a historic past and promising future, Marlboro County is proudly called home by many people. Beautiful restored homes, historic downtown Bennettsville, quaint neighborhoods, close communities and diverse industries make Marlboro County the place of choice to live, work and play.

Marlboro County is made up of eclectic towns and communities that include the county seat of Bennettsville as well as McColl, Clio, Blenheim, Tatum and Wallace. Cotton made this a wealthy part of South Carolina prior to the Civil War and up to the early 1900s. Today, Marlboro County is part of the “Cotton Trail,” a heritage tour that traces the influence of cotton in the rural south.

Marlborough County (original spelling) was named for John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) whose Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, was a gift to him from Queen Anne. Marlboro County (current spelling) was part of the Cheraw District and was established on March 2, 1785.

Public Safety

The county is under the jurisdiction of a sheriff and deputies. Fire service is provided by a mix of professional and volunteer fire departments throughout the county. Bennettsville, Clio and McColl each have independent, trained police forces. A communications system ties in all law enforcement agencies in the county and towns. This enhanced 911 system serves in all emergency situations.

Marlboro County Rescue (MCR) is one of the premier emergency services agencies in all of South Carolina and is the primary provider of Emergency Medical Services for Marlboro County, South Carolina. MCR is a non-profit EMS/Rescue Service that provides Advanced Life Support Emergency Medical Service to the citizens of and visitors to Marlboro County through an Enhanced 911 system 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Serving a population of 29,000 people, MCR operates from 4 different locations in the county, staffing 4 Advanced Life Support ambulances and 1 Basic Life Support ambulance daily.
