Education

Marlboro County and the surrounding areas offer a variety of public, private and specialty schools, colleges, academies and universities for students of all ages.

Marlboro County School System

Offers Pre-K through 12th grade students quality public education. The student population is comprised of 59% Black or African American, 31% White, 1% Hispanic and 9% other. In addition to the 4,339 students enrolled in the school district,1,362 students are educated through the Adult Education Program. The Marlboro County School District includes 8 elementary and middle schools and one consolidated high school. The dedicated teachers, administrators and staff “Motivate all children to Succeed with Dignity.” Seventy – nine percent who graduate commit to a higher education.

Marlboro Academy

is a college preparatory school near Bennettsville with about 300 students that is committed to its students and their highest level of academic achievement, dedicated to a superior development of character and moral integrity, and devoted to maintaining an environment that is safe, nurturing, and conducive to physical well-being. Marlboro Academy is accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association. The Academy serves students from Marlboro, Chesterfield, Richmond, and Scotland counties.

Marlboro County School District has a unique intermediate school experience for dedicated and motivated students at their School of Discovery. This school focuses on the arts (music, dance, art and drama) and scholastic achievement. Admission is by audition.

South Carolina Governor’s School of Math and Science

is one of only 12 public, residential high schools in the nation dedicated to the advanced study of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). GSSM is a place where students can develop their identities and shape their independence through a combination of challenging academics and real world opportunities. Located in Hartsville, SC, GSSM is about a 30 minute drive from Bennettsville.

Wilson High School was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in 1996 to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program (Grades 11-12) to highly-motivated students who complete a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and community service. The partnership of Wilson High School (Grades 9-12) and Williams Middle School (Grades 7-8) became an authorized IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in 2002. Wilson High School is located in Florence, SC which is about 45 minutes from Bennettsville.
